Upon release, the new shark-infested horror film Under Paris has risen to the top of the Netflix Global chart.

The film Under Paris has made quite a splash on the Netflix film charts. The JAWS-inspired French film has become an international hit, sailing to the number one spot on the Netflix Global Top 10 chart on the week of its debut. With over 40 million views upon its release, Under Paris is a campy environmental horror that has left viewers shocked, in awe, and most of all, thoroughly entertained.

Under Paris, directed by Xavier Gens, follows Sophia, a brilliant marine biologist whose husband fell victim to a shark attack while investigating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. When this same giant, mutated shark comes to ravage the Seine River just before a big triathlon, it is up to Sophia to put a stop to the trail of bloody carnage that follows in its wake.

Although the new film has had chart-topping success on Netflix, it has received admittedly negative reviews from critics. The film has garnered a critical score of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an audience score of 35%.

Giving the film a score of 1.5/4, Movie Nation’s Roger Moore describes Under Paris as “Heartless, pitiless…It’s got a couple of killer sequences of shark-attack mayhem in the Seine and the Catacombs beneath Paris, some arresting underwater shots — but little else to recommend it.” Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting asserts that “’Under Paris’ winds up feeling like a disparate blend of overly serious, familiar eco-horror and a zanier action horror movie with gory B-movie impulses.”

However, in spite of the new film’s absurdly unrealistic plot and questionable use of CGI, countless casual viewers and shark movie fanatics are singing its praises. On Rotten Tomatoes, Kathy C calls Under Paris “a bit campy, but quite entertaining…Not Oscar-worthy, but definitely popcorn-munching worthy, especially if you love the sights of Paris! Not a waste of time…Entertaining.”

Michele M states, “Yes it’s a shark/monster movie, but it’s a proper horror movie in the sense that it carries feelings of dread and hopelessness. Has a bit of gore, and quite the disaster vibe too. Worth a watch if you are in the mood for this kind of entertainment.”
