New Game of Thrones Prequel Series in Development
Previously thought to be forever anchored at shore, the Game of Thrones prequel Ten Thousand Ships will be sailing to HBO after all.
Recently, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin wrote on his blog that the prequel series, Ten Thousand Ships, will be moving forward with Eboni Booth writing the pilot. Despite being new to Hollywood, Booth has written for stage productions on and off Broadway and won a Pulitzer Prize for her work on the play Truth Seeking.
Set a millennia before the events of Game of Thrones, this series explores the origins of the Dornish people. The series follows Princess Nymeria and her surviving Rhoynar as they flee to Westeros in a fleet of ten thousand ships. Viewers of Game of Thrones might recognize the name Nymeria as the same name Arya Stark gives her direwolf.

Ten Thousand Ships dates back to the later years of Game of Thrones when HBO commissioned various prequel and spinoff ideas set in Westeros. One of those evolved into House of the Dragon, which premiered its second season at 9 p.m. on June 16. However, other series ideas, such as a Jon Snow sequel series starring Kit Harrington, were left on the cutting room floor. In addition, several other series based on various characters in House of the Dragon and beyond remain in development.

One series that finally has a greenlight is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Based on one of Martin’s auxiliary Game of Thrones works, the series added Owen Dennis (Black Mirror) as a director. In addition, Peter Claffey (Vikings: Valhalla) and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) lead the series.
House of the Dragon‘s second season, starring Emma D’arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Rhys Ifans, premiered this Sunday on HBO, with a third season currently in development. You can watch the entire first season on Max.
