It has been eight years since Rihanna last released a full-length album. However, the singer just gave an update to her fans regarding a new album.

In the time since her last records’s release, the “We Found Love” singer created Fenty Beauty, expanded her Fenty empire, and had two children. Now, she is ready to get back into music. The artist gave fans an update on her highly anticipated album, referred to as “R9.”

At the launch of Fenty Hair on June 10, the singer opened up about the status of her ninth album. Rihanna revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that she is crafting her new record from scratch after putting it to the side for so long.

Fans became worried when they spotted the artist sporting a shirt that read “I’m Retired” recently, assuming this meant she was done with music.

The interviewer asked the singer about the shirt, to which she replied, “People got triggered with that retired word, they were like ‘We’re never getting an album now.’ No one read the other line, it was something about, ‘This is as dressed up as I get.'”

She explained that she has a fresh perspective, but does not want to neglect her old songs that have not been released yet. However, she is definitely “clocked in” and will be actively working on R9.

“I think that music, for me, is a new discovery,” she revealed. “I’m rediscovering things. I have been working on the album for so long that I kinda put all that stuff aside and now I’m prepared to go back in the studio. I’m gonna start — give me a second!”

Recently, her song “Diamonds” became RIAA Diamond certified, and she sold over 1 million total album units in the U.S. in 2024. Rihanna is the only singer to achieve this milestone without having released an album in the 2020s.

As we wait for R9, you can listen to her entire music catalog on all streaming platforms.
