The beloved artist tragically passed away in 2021. Fans feel the announcement is bittersweet, sharing their excitement for new music and sadness that the singer is not here to see her legacy.
SOPHIE is an artist I deeply treasure, so the fact that we're getting a new album when I thought that wasn't ever gonna happen is making my heart swell with bittersweet excitement. I just wish she was here to see how much we love her and the wonderful impact she's had. https://t.co/nOwjKWKubZ

Future Classic and Transgressive Records shared the news online. They revealed, “A couple of years ago Sophie’s family approached us regarding an album release honouring her legacy, drawing from the material that she was so close to completing. Since then this self-titled and final Sophie album was lovingly brought into being by Sophie’s family. As label partners, we’re humbled and overjoyed to share this music in celebration of Sophie’s life and her extraordinary impact on culture.”
SOPHIE will be released on September 27. Listeners can already enjoy a single from the album, “Reason Why.” The track features Kim Petras and BC Kingdom.
i think this is the perfect song to introduce the album. accessible, very SOPHIE, and overall just brilliant. Kim/SOPHIE could’ve been a duo just like Charli/AG, but even that was taken away from them and us fans. SOPHIE, you will never be forgotten. https://t.co/osoqR1dNaw

Petras promoted the song, writing a message to her collaborator: “Soph you’re still changing music!!! I’m so happy to have this piece of you with me, I love you forever.”
SOPHIE’s family also gave a statement regarding the new record. They explain the process of its creation, recalling, “When we, Sophie’s family, took our first steps towards bringing this project to fruition we contacted the dear friends with whom she envisioned the album. We wrote, ‘We have been finding comfort in the music Sophie left us, it is a gift that we truly cherish as we try to find a way forward, with Sophie forever at the center of our worlds.’”
The “Immaterial” singer’s loved ones then address the choice to publish the album. They express, “It feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most.” They continue, “Sophie gave all of herself to her music. It’s here that she can always be found.”
