Smile was initially scheduled for straight-to-streaming release on Paramount+, but it performed so incredibly well with test audiences that it was given a theatrical release. There is speculation that the sequel could be an even bigger hit, and fans are excited.

Director Parker Finn’s film follows Dr. Rose Cotter, a psychiatrist who starts experiencing horrific events after witnessing the suicide of patient Laura Weaver (Caitlin Stasey). She then discovers a demon that leads its victims to suicide by tormenting them with a series of people fixed with menacing smiles. Whoever witnesses the death of the entity’s victims naturally becomes its next target. Cotter makes it her mission to defeat it.

Smile ends with an unsuccessful and possessed Cotter lighting herself on fire in front of her ex-boyfriend, Jole (Kyle Gallner), ultimately passing on the curse to him. Finn previously stated, “I…think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of ‘Smile.’ There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design.” It is safe to say that the ending of Smile set the director up perfectly for a sequel.

Smile 2 will shift its emphasis onto the new character Skye Riley, a beaming pop star portrayed by Naomi Scott. The official synopsis reads, “About to embark on a world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her past.” Smile 2 will also feature the return of Joel, as well as the introduction of new characters portrayed by Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Dylan Gelula, and Raúl Castillo.

Gage spoke to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year about just how intense the upcoming movie is: “You just think, ‘Oh, it’s acting, it’s gonna be fine,’ but that movie is so scary. The whole crew was terrified. That smile itself is just so creepy, and then you throw the most gory scenes on top of it.”

So, kudos to Finn for keeping the thrill going. The Smile franchise is based on the directors’s 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept.
