Freaky Friday 2 has started production, with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis making their return to the screens.

The iconic 2000s duo finally returns to a Disney set after the 2003 release of the original Freaky Friday film. Though Disney has yet to release plot details, they stated that the sequel will make its way to theaters by 2025. Potential rumors have spread, stating that the sequel will feature adult versions of Anna and Tess Coleman switching bodies once again with two teenage girls.

Many of the same actors are stepping into the lives of their previous characters. Once again, Curtis and Lohan will portray mother and daughter Tess and Anna. Joining the two in the sequel are returning cast members Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Additionally, the new cast includes Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Sophia Hammons.

Disney stated that the movie “picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”

The first Freaky Friday film followed the mother-daughter duo. Constantly arguing over everything, they found themselves eating fortune cookies that magically switched their bodies. Coursing through the film, they struggled to find balance pretending to be the other. By the end, the pair put aside their differences and began to appreciate one another.

Fans are excited to view a blast from the past as they watch their favorite characters return to the screens. The original film reached $160 million in theaters worldwide, and producers hope to hit the same mark.

The history of the film started with Mary Rodgers when she published her novel, Freaky Friday, in 1972. Translating it to a screenplay, the first film adaptation premiered in 1976 by Walt Disney Company, starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. In 1995, the film was remade again with Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffman, as well as in 2018 with Heidi Blickenstaff and Cozi Zuehlsdorff.
