In 2025, Prince will be given the posthumous (and long overdue) honor of receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Last weekend, a portion of downtown Minneapolis shut down to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of Prince’s culture-shifting 1984 album, Purple Rain. The album, which recently earned a number four spot on Apple Music’s Top 10 Best Albums of All Time list, cemented the 80’s rock star’s legacy as a true legend of the music industry. On June 24, fans gained yet another reason to celebrate the Minneapolis superstar; Prince will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2025.

Jimmy Jam, a music producer who knew the “When Doves Cry” singer, announced that Prince will receive the posthumous honor. He shared the news at a press conference in Ovation Hollywood, along with the rest of the Walk of Fame Class of 2025. “The iconic, my junior high school classmate in Minneapolis, Prince, is going on the Walk of Fame,” the producer exclaimed. This is the first time that the “Little Red Corvette” singer, who died of a fentanyl overdose in 2016, has been nominated for a Walk of Fame star.

Other musical powerhouses awarded alongside Prince include Green Day, Fantasia, Busta Rhymes, and Keith Urban. The Walk of Fame Class of 2025 also features pop culture legends, like Jane Fonda and David Beckham. Furthermore, it includes more contemporary stars, such as Colin Farrell, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Nye.

Surprisingly, social media reactions to Prince receiving a posthumous Walk of Fame star have been somewhat mixed. Many are shocked that the rock ‘n roll legend has not yet received the honor and are celebrating the decades-overdue award. However, others are troubled by the fact that the “1999” singer refused the honor twice in life and question whether the posthumous star will truly honor the deceased musician’s wishes.

Readers can stream Prince’s music on all platforms and view the full list of the Walk of Fame Class of 2025 on the landmark’s website.
