The beloved ogre is returning. Eddie Murphy, the iconic voice behind Donkey, told Collider he is done recording for Shrek 5.

Nearing the first Shrek film’s 25 anniversary, Murphy gave exciting updates about Shrek 5 and a possible Donkey spin-off to Collider.  “We started doing ‘Shrek 4’ or [‘Shrek’] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” explained Murphy. The Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F actor also hinted that Donkey, the adorable and funny character he voices, will have his own film.

“‘Shrek’ is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a ‘Shrek,’ and we’re doing a Donkey [movie],” he continued. According to Murphy Shrek 5 is set to come out 15 years after the last Shrek film. “I started recording ‘Shrek,’ I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next,” he stated.

The original Shrek grossed $487 million globally, establishing DreamWorks Animation as a major player in the industry. Moreover, it also received an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. In addition, the sequel, Shrek 2, earned an impressive $928 million worldwide. These two films were also contenders for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, told Variety in 2023 that the latest Shrek installment will return with the original cast. In addition to Murphy confirming his return, Mike Myers, who voiced Shrek, and Cameron Diaz, the voice behind Fiona, might also be in the cast.

“We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return,” Meledandri explained.

Moreover, in an interview with GQ in 2022, Myers stated he loved portraying Shrek. “If I had to do one ‘Shrek’ a year I’d be thrilled.” Although no new cast members have been announced yet, fans can look forward to these announcements once the film’s production progresses.
