Marvel Enlists New Writer for Hit Animated Series X-Men 97
The most acclaimed Marvel project of all time, X-Men 97, has enlisted a new writer for its future seasons following the departure of creator Beau DeMayo.
Deadline reported yesterday that Marvel Animation has promoted one of its key pieces of talent to take the reins on X-Men 97 starting, with its third season. As per the article, Matthew Chauncey will take over as head writer in the third season. Previously working on two seasons of What If, Chauncey will serve as the head writer for the upcoming third season.
Previously, series creator Beau DeMayo served as head writer. However, he was unexpectedly fired just days before the premiere of the first season. Following the near-universal praise for the series, the reason why Marvel fired him remains a mystery. However, DeMayo completed writing the second season before his departure, hence why Chauncey is only taking charge for the third season.
That first season of X-Men 97 is one of the best things I’ve ever seen, whatever Beau DeMayo did to get fired must have been really bad. It’s surprising nobody has really reported what it exactly was.

X-Men 97 is the revival of X-Men: The Animated Series. Running from 1992 to 1997, this Saturday morning cartoon remains the first introduction of many to Marvel’s mutant team. X-Men 97 is set in the same universe and continues the story of the original series, but it brings back several members of the cast to reprise their roles. It was the first series to be released under the Marvel Animation banner. It is also the first Marvel series to have no connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
#XMen97 is the third most watched series in 2024 on Disney+ with for 6.8% of total viewership.
