The world of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon will soon be reimagined in a bloodier, longer director’s cut.

Yesterday, Netflix unveiled the trailer for Rebel Moon – The Director’s Cut, which lands on the streaming platform on August 2. Though the trailer shows off several scenes viewers might recognize from the original Rebel Moon duology, many scenes are exclusive to the director’s cut. The world appears to be a much more expansive place than we originally saw in the PG-13 versions.

Originally conceived as a Star Wars film ten years ago, Rebel Moon is a huge passion project from director Zack Snyder (Man of Steel). Netflix bought the rights in 2021 after reworking it to become an original film. The first part, A Child of Fire, arrived last December. Its sequel, The Scargiver, then dropped in April. Now titled Chalice of Blood and Curse of Forgiveness, both director’s cuts have an R-rating and contain a lot of new footage.

Snyder often releases director’s cuts of his films. Many might know him thanks to the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League, which will have a theatrical release. His vocal fanbase is also rather infamous.

Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella (Argylle) as Kora, a former soldier for the Motherworld. The two films focus on her assembling a group of warriors to defend the moon of Veldt from her former allies. Joining her is former general Titus (Djimon Honsou), her lover Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), and swordswoman Nemesis (Doona Bae). Mercenary Kai (Charlie Hunnam), blacksmith Tarak (Staz Nair), and the Bloodaxe Siblings (Ray Fisher and Cleopatra Coleman) also join her. In addition, Anthony Hopkins appears as the robotic knight, Jimmy. Finally, Ed Skein portrays Admiral Atticus Noble and Fra Free appears as Balisarus, Kora’s tyrannical adoptive father.

The original PG-13 Rebel Moon films received negative reviews. With just 22% and 17% scores on Rotten Tomatoes respectively, the director’s cuts have a rather low bar to clear. However, Snyder has a history of vastly improving his films through director’s cuts.
