Award-winning director and philanthropist Malakai originally created Made in Her Image to dedicate a career pipeline for young women and communities needing representation. Based in Los Angeles and Phoenix, Malakai has been strategic in her mission to place these opportunities directly into the hands of those who need them most.

The collaboration between Fem The Future and MIHI culminated in an inspiring event this past March. The organizations hosted the Open Lens Film Lab, where they educated 25 students on the intricacies of filmmaking. This initiative was designed to nurture the talents of young filmmakers to gain knowledge, confidence, and a sense of empowerment and belonging in the industry.

Next, the students are preparing to premiere their films at the Open Lens showcase in August after completing the program. This event will serve as a platform for these young creators to present their work on the silver screen; the showcase is not just about displaying films; it is about celebrating the journey these students have undertaken.

Furthermore, students participated in workshops, creator courses, and mentorship sessions throughout the Open Lens Film Lab. These were led by professionals who reflected the students’ communities, including prominent figures like Janelle Monáe and Malakai.

Lastly, the collective mission of Fem The Future and MIHI is clear: to nurture and focus on young women, girls of color, and genderqueer individuals in the film, media, and technology industries. By empowering young filmmakers and providing them with the tools they need to succeed, these organizations are helping to create a more inclusive and diverse industry, one story at a time.
