Psychological Drama Mothers’ Instinct Now in Theaters
Mothers’ Instinct, starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, graced select theaters starting on July 26. The psychological drama is set in 1960s suburbia, but the idyllic surroundings can’t conceal the harrowing events at play. Considering grief, obsession, and feminine intuition, the film is Benoit Delhomme’s directorial debut.
Hathaway portrays carefree Celine, mother to Max, and just next door lives her best friend Alice, depicted by Chastain. Alice’s son, Theo, is the same age as Max, and the boys are as close as their mothers. In impeccable 1960s apparel and leading seemingly perfect lives, it seems inevitable that something must go wrong. A fatal accident threatens the women’s friendship, and the tension between them continues to grow, eclipsing their once peaceful lives.
Celine, formerly the resilient crutch to fragile Alice, unravels into instability, and her erratic behavior knows no limits. Alice, consumed by doubt, is unable to find solace with her unsupportive husband Simon, embodied by Anders Danielsen Lie of The Worst Person in the World acclaim. Celine’s husband Damian, is Josh Charles.
Chastain revealed the select theaters where Mothers’ Instinct will be shown via social media, and her excitement is palpable.

Both Hathaway and Chastain are producers, and the film also touts Chastain’s Freckle Films banner. The film is being distributed by NEON, the studio behind other exciting projects this year such as Longlegs and Cuckoo.
NEON also distributed Eileen, another 1960s psychodrama that stars Hathaway. Hathaway’s Rebecca Saint John is as laidback and stylish as her Celine is at the start, and circumstances devolve similarly. Let’s hope these two films are the first in a long line of riveting Anne Hathaway period dramas, because we can’t seem to get enough, and neither can fans.
Fans shared their excitement about the film’s release online, and we’re in the same boat.
