Halsey Releases New Music Video for ‘Lucky,’ Britney Spears Reacts
Halsey released a new music video for “Lucky,” depicting her health battle with Leukemia and lupus. The single samples Britney Spears’s track with the same title.
Britney Spears shared a post stating she was upset and felt bullied by Halsey’s music video. However, Spears later clarified in another post that she didn’t share the original post and that it was fake news. Halsey responded by expressing her love for Britney and sharing a heartfelt message.
The promotions for the song featured Halsey as a superstar character in clips and photos, wearing a pink wig with a Y2K aesthetic. The character is made out to be a diva with a not-so-good personality by the media.
The promotion photos also included a fictional tabloid magazine featuring negative news with headlines like “Exclusive: Halsey on House Arrest” or “Halsey’s Fine! But Is She?”
These elements signify the negative narratives some celebrities can be subjected to by the media, similar to the controversy and negative focus that followed Britney Spears years ago.
Halsey’s “Lucky” addresses negative narratives she heard about herself on the record with lyrics such as, “And why is she losin’ so much weight? I heard it’s from the drugs she ate,” and “A girl like that as a mother it must be tough, problem child.”
The music video was directed by Gia Coppola. It depicts that the character, just like Halsey, has more to her life than stardom and is struggling with health problems and personal relationships.
Halsey shared in a post that she found herself singing Britney Spear’s “Lucky” when she started treatment and explained how she requested the sample and the reaction she received from Spears.
I wrote her the longest, sappiest, stan letter of all time and she was soooo nice https://t.co/AYyy73pxKl
