Squid Game: Third and Final Season In the Works

Three years after the debut of Netflix’s most popular series, Squid Game is heating up for a two-pronged return.

Yesterday, the streamer released an official first look at the second season of Squid Game. Though barely a minute long, the teaser features a look at what appears to be a new game joining the roster of games our contestants must compete in. However, the penalty for failure likely remains the same as last season: death.

Along with the season two announcement, the teaser revealed that the series would return for a third and final season in 2025.

Squid Game is a Korean language series from the mind of Hwang Dong-hyuk, focusing on a group of ordinary citizens forced into a life-and-death competition to win a massive cash prize. Of the 456 competitors that enter, one walks away with the money, and the other 455 die. Lee Jung-Jae, most recently seen in The Acolyte, stars in the series.

The series had been the brainchild of Dong-hyuk for a very long time until Netflix began to invest more heavily in foreign productions. The series was announced in 2019, under the title Round Six.

The first season of Squid Game was released in 2021 and immediately became a massive success. As of now, it remains the most-watched Netflix original series ever. A second season was confirmed in 2022. The series’ popularity has skyrocketed since the release of its first season.

In 2023, Netflix released Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality show based on the games played in the series. In addition, YouTuber James Donaldson, known worldwide as Mr. Beast, created his own version of the game. Donaldson is now the most popular YouTuber in the world. Despite the anti-capitalist messages of the series, both recreations were positively received by Dong-hyuk.

Season two of Squid Game is set to premiere at the end of the year and the final season will follow in 2025. Catch up on season one now on Netflix.
