Scrubs Creator Bill Lawrence Hints That a New Reboot Is Closer Than We Think
It’s time to pull out the long list of Y2K series turned 2020 reboots and add Scrubs to that lineup. Creator Bill Lawrence recently teased that a full-length revival of the medical sitcom could be on the horizon.
After a less-than-stellar final season that ushered in a new cast after Zach Braff’s departure, fans have longed for proper closure with the series, so much so that they declare season eight as the final season rather than the actual ninth season.

Between snapshot interviews and Braff’s and Donald Faison’s rewatch podcast, Fake Doctors, Real Friends, the cast has toyed with the idea of bringing the series back in some capacity. But now, it seems a lot more concrete than we thought.
“It’s gonna happen. I don’t know when, but within the next five years,” the Clueless actor mentioned. It seems they’ve expedited that timeline, as Lawrence hopes to have a concept nailed down within “the next six months.”
For the cast and crew, the most exciting part is that no one has to do the reboot—instead, they’re looking forward to bringing the painfully real reality of being a doctor with a comedic twist to a new generation of medical students and healthcare professionals.
“Look, there’s no huge drive because everybody’s successful, and I think the show was on for like, 72 years, but on the other hand, medical people over here right now are very heroic to me. It’s been a tough road, and no one’s becoming a doctor right now to get rich here in America, and we’ve all been hanging out and talking,” he stated.

One thing is for sure: Lawrence does not want to do a one-off film that was once an idea. Instead, he wants to do a multi-season series that follows the lives of the original doctors we came to love, but also, the new class at Sacred Heart who are finding their footing in the courageous yet tragic world of medicine.
“I don’t want to do it as a movie, but I’m definitely open to doing a couple more years of that show. It would not only be fun to see where the characters I used to love are now, but also to see what a young doctor nowadays looks like, as far as the kids coming in behind them, you know.”
