Sabrina Carpenter Continues to Rule Summer in Latest Interview

Sabrina Carpenter discussed her chart-topping hits, returning to acting, and what to expect from her upcoming album in her latest interview with Variety.

Any fan of the pop star knows she has a love for all things vintage. The cover art for her summer hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” evoke an allure similar to Marilyn Monroe. The starlet expresses, “I love the faces of the ’60s and ’90s — old Hollywood, flirty and fun. This is definitely the vibe of my album.”

On June 29, the singer achieved her first number one with “Please Please Please.” The previous week, “Espresso” reached number three on the charts and became the third-fastest song to reach a billion streams on Spotify. Carpenter explains, “I’m so happy I finished this album before any of the songs came out. Not that I think I would have let [the singles’ success] get in my head. But I really do think sometimes you can’t help but write from a different perspective after experiencing certain life events. I’m trying to avoid calling this ‘my dream album,’ because I don’t think I would have been able to dream up this set of songs a couple years ago.”

The artist signed with her current label, Island Records, in January 2021 and released emails i can’t send the following year. The album dictated a self-aware and brutally honest coming-of-age story with lyrics inspired by real-life events. “‘Emails’ was hard to put out, but it marked the beginning of a really freeing and artistic time for me,” she states.

The LP was her highest-charting project to date, reaching number twenty-three. The project remained on the Billboard 200 albums chart for 43 weeks and spawned an 80-date international headlining tour.

Now the pop star is ready for a new era with her upcoming record “Short n’ Sweet.” The songwriter expresses, “It’s my second ‘big girl’ album; it’s a companion but it’s not the same. When it comes to having full creative control and being a full-fledged adult, I would consider this a sophomore album.” 

The album is predicted to be a hit thanks to “Espresso”‘s success. The comical phrase, “That’s that me, espresso,” has been quoted from many celebrities and inspired an ad for the Paris Olympics.

Along with the song, her performances at Coachella and Saturday Night Live have officially launched “Sabrina Summer,” which Taylor Swift predicted back in June.

It might surprise fans to know that the singer’s team did not want to release “Espresso.” The artist states, “I was completely alone in wanting to release ‘Espresso.’ Not so much from my immediate team. But when it came to ‘the powers above,’” she air-quotes, “there was a lot of questioning behind whether it made sense. But they trusted me in the end, and I was happy that I believed in myself at that moment.” 

The upcoming album is inspired by ’90s pop, but fans shouldn’t expect the artist to reveal current details of her life. “It feels easier to write about things that happened in the past, or that haven’t happened yet. My producers tell me I’m beating a dead horse because I’ll write a song three years after I last spoke to the person who inspired the lyric,” the pop star expresses.

The vinyl for “Short n’ Sweet” includes a non-streaming bonus track. The cassette and CD variants will have alternative covers. The “Nonsense” singer states, “I spent so much time working on the vinyl; I think it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever made.”

Additionally, due to the success of the singer’s music career, she has had to take a break from acting. However, the actress still looks at scripts “in the hopes of securing a spot in a musical or an original film.” She’s waiting for the perfect script to come along.
