Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a play based on the hit Netflix series, will bring Broadway to the Upside Down in 2025.

Last month, the Stranger Things crew released an exciting look at the making of the series’ fifth and final season. According to the behind-the-scenes video, the season is currently about halfway through production and will likely hit streaming in 2025. The thrilling finale is not the only thing that fans of the supernatural horror series will have to look forward to next year. A play based on the series, titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow, will make its Broadway debut in 2025.

The First Shadow shares the universe and mythology of the series it draws from. The plot of the spinoff play is based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things executive producer Kate Trefry, and Jack Thorne, the playwright who wrote Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The stage play turns the clock back to 1959 in Hawkins, Indiana, decades before Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) encountered any demogorgons.

The synopsis for Stranger Things: The First Shadow is as follows: “Before the world turned upside down. Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy…and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.”

The play broke box office records in 2023 opening at the West End in London. It received rave reviews during its West End run, including a review from Variety’s David Benedict, who wrote that “the humor [of the play] is embedded in a far darker tale that, couched in the frame of a kids’ investigative adventure, opens out onto the hidden terrors of the monsters from the Upside Down. The beginnings of those monsters are explored through the slow burn of the expository first act, climaxing with a big reveal of a young version of a central character from the show.”

Stranger Things: The First Shadow hits Broadway in March 2025. Fans can stream the original series on Netflix.
