Christina Aguilera Talks Fame, Controversy, and Motherhood in New Interview
In a new interview with Glamour, Christina Aguilera discusses her rise to fame, moments of controversy, and perspective on motherhood.
This year marks the 25 anniversary of the pop icon’s first self-titled album. In an interview with Glamour, the singer shares her gratitude for the album and her breakout 1999 single, “Genie in a Bottle.”
“I think the biggest word that sums up that first record for me is grateful,” Aguilera expresses. “…After 25 years I’m so proud of it. I think to sustain anything for a lengthy amount of time takes a lot of work and dedication and passion. There are many elements that go into being able to build something.”

Rising to stardom in the late 1990s along with pop sensations like Britany Spears and Jessica Simpson, the “What a Girl Wants” singer often felt “boxed-in” by the teenybopper mold that was so popular then.
“I didn’t love the bubblegum thing, where you had to play a virgin but not act like one,” she explained. “When I was performing ‘Genie’ and ‘What a Girl Wants’ and ‘Come on Over,’ I got bored easily. Creatively, it was one-dimensional.”
While making her 2002 album Stripped alongside a new creative team, Aguilera became more artistically free. However, with shockingly provocative tracks like “Dirrty” and the dedication of her single, “Beautiful,” to the LGBTQ+ community, the pop legend also faced massive criticism.
Recalling how she took a stand on issues that were so controversial in the early 2000s, Aguilera stated, “I think it was just a matter of believing so wholeheartedly in my vision, which was to fight for sexuality.”
As fans will be excited to hear, the singer currently has a new English-language album in the works. “I’ve been accumulating [songs],” Aguilera teased. “I’m actually dying to get it out. I just haven’t fully had time.”
The singer has been caught up in another creative project — her children. The artist tearfully described her journey with motherhood, sharing, “[My children are] going to make their own choices and mistakes that define how they want to be. It’s such a layered, interesting thing to be a parent and watch these people, these humans, grow up.”
