Sabrina Carpenter’s New Album Short n’ Sweet Garners Massive Excitement
Rising pop star Sabrina Carpenter released her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet.
Carpenter has had quite the year, opening for Taylor Swift’s “Era’s Tour,” performing at music festivals like Coachella, and dominating the Billboard Hot 100.
The lead single, “Espresso,” which Carpenter called a “little song,” she wanted to release before Coachella, quickly became her biggest hit. “Espresso” was named one of Billboard’s “Songs of the Summer,” peaking at number four on the charts.
Her follow-up single, “Please Please Please,” became her first number-one hit on the charts, and the music video featured her boyfriend and actor Barry Keogan. Throughout the new record, Carpenter and her team, consisting of veteran producer Jack Antanoff and fellow singer Julia Michaels, play with various genres, including R&B, country, and folk.Track six, “Bed Chem,” is a sexy Christina Aguilera-inspired song about sexual chemistry, and track five, “Coincidence,” is an upbeat campfire song with Simon and Garfunkle influence.
There is also “Taste,” which is a pop stinger about leaving a mark on your ex that their new partner will surely miss. The music video takes inspiration from the 1992 horror film Death Becomes Her. In the video, she and actress Jenna Ortega attempt to murder each other, recreating scenes from the film. In the end, Ortega believes she’s finally killed Carpenter, only to find out she killed her boyfriend instead.
Some have speculated online that “Taste,” along with other songs, was written about Carpenter’s relationship with singer Shawn Mendes. The two dated for a few months in 2023; however, Mendes was seen with singer Camilla Cabello shortly after.
Many think the ex, referenced in “Taste,” is Cabello. The singer herself released a new album, C,XOXO, earlier this summer and has been posting TikToks to songs rumored to be about Carpenter. Whether or not Carpenter and Cabello are referencing each other is unconfirmed, but Cabello has expressed nothing but love for Carpenter and her song “Espresso” in recent interviews.
Short n’ Sweet charted at one on the Billboard 200, narrowly beating the rerelease of Travis Scott’s Days Before Rodeo, and is predicted to hold her position for next week’s charting. You can stream Short n’ Sweet here.
