Cyndi Lauper, who mentioned she won her first VMA 40 years ago, at the very first award show stated that it was an amazing year for women in 1984, and 2024, it’s yet another year where women dominate music. Lauper went on to praise Carpenter before excitedly introducing her to the crowd.

As the crowd roars, the camera pans to Carpenter, who’s sitting on a gondola, surrounded by twinkling lights – emphasizing the star she is. The singer donned a costume similar to her red carpet look: a Bob Mackie archival gown that was worn by Madonna at the 1993 Oscars.

She began her set with the hit “Please Please Please” (to answer Lauper’s question: no, she couldn’t sing, “motherf*****). But she could push a moonman and make out with an alien.

She transitioned into “Taste,” the most recent single off her new album Short n’ Sweet, where she left her five-foot impression on the audience, only for a second though.

Of course, she had to end her most iconic song to date, “Espresso.” Although it was knocked out of the running for the VMA for “Song of the Summer,” which fans are confused by, they celebrated the song – so much so that you could hear them during the broadcast.

She ended the performance lying in a sea of astronauts and at that moment, fans knew Carpenter had made her mark on the mainstage when she was a pre-show performer just last year.

The singer and her two singles are up for six nominations tonight, including:

  • “Best Art Direction” (“Please Please Please”)
  • “Best Pop”
  • “Artist of the Year”
  • “Song of the Year” (“Espresso”)
  • “Best Direction” (“Please Please Please”)
  • “Best Editing” (“Espresso”)

Fans hope she walks away with at least one moon man tonight, but even if she doesn’t, her album Short n’ Sweet is still dominating the charts – find out why for yourself here
