After much speculation about whether Taylor Swift would back a candidate this year, the singer broke her silence on Instagram to express her support for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Following the first presidential debate between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump, the “Cruel Summer” singer shared her stance on the election in a new post.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift stated in her post.

This endorsement follows an incident where Trump posted AI-generated images on Truth Social falsely claiming that she had endorsed his presidential campaign. Swift mentioned the incident spiked her “fears” about AI.

“I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” she continued.

This isn’t the first time she has spoken out against the 2024 presidential nominee. In 2020, she accused the former president of having “fanned the flames of white supremacy.”

“After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November,” the singer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, criticizing Trump’s handling of the Black Lives Matter protests.

The superstar has faced social media criticism for her silence on the upcoming election, with some expressing disappointment that she hasn’t yet used her platform to publicly declare her political stance.

Despite the criticism for her temporary silence, this isn’t her first time engaging in politics or supporting Kamala Harris. The singer supported Harris during her 2020 run as Vice President.

“Gonna be watching and supporting Kamala Harris by yelling at the tv a lot,” she wrote in 2020, cheering Harris on for the Vice President debate.

Fans were moved to see Swift take a stance on this election.
