MAX released the first official trailer for season 2 of The Last of Us, featuring the return of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Max has renewed the popular video game-turned-series for its second season. After releasing season one in January 2023, the streaming service moved forward with another season after garnering mass attention.

Critics and viewers praised the series, ranking it as MAX’s most-watched debut season and accumulating several awards. With 24 nominations and 8 Emmy Awards, audiences can expect an even more thrilling season ahead.

The new trailer features a warped and ominous strain of “Future Days” by Pearl Jam. With the haunting musical note, the footage sets the tone for the season as the cast and crew continue to tell the tale of the apocalyptic survivors Joel (Pedro Pascal), Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), and a set of fresh faces.

The most recent additions to the cast include Isabela Merced as Dina, Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, Young Mazino as Jesse, Spencer Lord as Owen, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, and Ariela Barer as Mel. Beetlejuice actress Catherine O’Hara makes an appearance as she seemingly questions Pedro Pascal’s character in a therapeutic setting.

Based on the 2013 game, the first season picks up after society is destroyed by a global pandemic. The narrative centers on Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler charged with protecting and escorting a 14-year-old girl who is immune to the zombifying illness and possibly the last hope for humanity. Throughout their cross-country travels, the unexpected pair grow close and form a pseudo-father-daughter relationship.

The second season is expected to adapt from the video game’s 2020 sequel. It takes place five years later and partially follows Kaitlyn Dever’s character Abby. Although the official plot for the new season is unclear, part two of the video game centers on Ellie seeking revenge for murder. As well as Abby, a soldier entangled in a battle between her militia and a religious cult.

The official logline reads, “After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”

Although a specific release date has not yet been revealed, the latest season of the MAX drama is scheduled to premiere in 2025.
