Gyeongseong Creature: Mystery, Horror, and Suspense Ring In New Season

Netflix

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

Gyeongseong Creature officially returned to Netflix last Friday with its season two premiere. Shocking plot twists and turns leave viewers wanting for more.

Last week, Glitter Magazine had the privilege of attending the press conference for Gyeongseong Creature. With the second season premiere on September 27, viewers were able to binge the new season the same day. Filled with mystery, horror, and suspense, here are key moments viewers may have missed. In addition, hear what the actors and directions discussed in the build-up to season two.

For those who have not watched the series, the main plot point of the series surrounds an unusual monster. In the Spring of 1945, during Japan’s rule over Korea, two young adults are confronted by a strange creature developed from greed and must battle against it for survival. The creature has long tentacles, invoking fear across the city. In addition, the series has a time jump from 1945 to the present day, which can sometimes be confusing for viewers.

In regards to length, the second season travels at a speedier pace compared to the first season. While being three episodes shorter, the season wraps up cleanly until a shocking twist rocks viewer’s screens. To recap, season one had multiple cliffhangers, including a post-credits scene that changes the scope for Chae-ok and Tae-sang. The first ending featured Chae-ok and hospital prisoners escaping, leading to season two picking up right where they left off. The Ongseong Hospital was turned into a life of destruction ahead of the end of Japan’s colonial rule over Korea in August 1945.

For part two of season one, it is confirmed Lady Maeda was behind it all. From supplying the labs with the experiments to selecting the subjects for testing. The post-credit scene also features the 60-year time jump to modern-day Seoul, where Tae-sang’s unchanged appearance raises questions about his special powers and abilities.

As for season two, both the cast members and directors are excited for fans to experience the same characters in a different setting. “Since season one was set against 1945, which was a tragic, tumultuous time, I wanted a more still, static feel to it. Everything you see on the screen and hear on the screen is fast-paced and quick-I think that’s what sets the second season apart from the first, so that was my area of focus.” Director Chung stated.

Now, pacing is key to following the new stories that lie ahead in season two. Those who already watched season one will feel the pace change almost immediately in the next season. “It’s one common narrative overarching both seasons, so there are moments where you can connect back to season one, like little Easter eggs. It’s going to be fun for you to look for those!” Chung added.

Action and chemistry between the characters is another element of season two, with the cast sharing their admiration for each other. “…I don’t share that many scenes with them, but the spark that we had when we shared a scene- that doesn’t have to be proportional to the number of scenes. More scenes doesn’t necessarily mean better chemistry. It could just be one scene together and an explosion of synergy.” Lee Mu-saeng stated.

“I was so pleasantly surprised too. I mean, are words even necessary to describe their finesse in action? Even then, I was so surprised I sprung up. Better stay tuned for their action scenes!” Mu-saeng added.

Both seasons of the Korean drama series are available now on Netflix. Watch the trailer for season two below.
