At Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign rally in Detroit, rapper Eminem introduced former President Barack Obama and shared his thoughts about the upcoming election.

Despite previously speaking out against former President Donald Trump, many on social media were surprised to see Eminem supporting Harris. Others pointed out that this was a strange jump for the rapper, emphasizing his past actions, specifically his history of ridiculing women and members of the LBGT community, including fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

This summer, with the release of his album The Death of Slim Shady, he poked fun at the shooting injuring her foot. In his single “Houdini,” he raps, “If I was to ask for Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me/Would I really have a shot at a feat?” which was heavily criticized online. Stallion fans thought this reference was out of line, calling out the rapper’s actions, stating this lyric choice was “cringe” and “out of touch.” The female rapper was also present at a Harris rally earlier this year, performing her songs “Mamushi,” “Savage,” and “Body.”

This move to support VP Harris’s campaign is a positive step forward for the rapper, using his platform to stress the importance of using your voice. Eminem grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and still has a strong connection to the city. He mentioned in his speech, “I’m here tonight for a couple of important reasons. As most of you know, the city of Detroit and the whole state of Michigan mean a lot to me. And going into this election, the spotlight is on us more than ever, and I think it’s important to use your voice. So I’m encouraging everyone to go out and vote, please.”

Following the rapper’s message, former President Obama addressed the audience, jokingly quoting his song “Lose Yourself.”
