Nicky Jam Calls Out Donald Trump in New Video, Retracts Endorsement
Puerto Rican singer Nicky Jam has retracted his support for former President Donald Trump following insensitive remarks made at Trump’s rally in New York this past Sunday.
The fallout from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s comment referring to Puerto Rico as “a floating piece of garbage” continues to impact the Trump campaign negatively. Nicky Jam, who endorsed Trump this past September, citing hopes that he would “be good for the economy,” took to Instagram to express his disappointment, stating he never anticipated the events that unfolded at the rally.
“Never in my life did I think that just one month later a comedian would show up and criticize my country, and speak poorly of my country. And for that, I revoke any support for Donald Trump and I’m stepping aside from any kind of political situation,” the singer shared with his 4 million followers.
“Puerto Rico is to be respected,” the star concluded in his video.
He faced backlash from Dreamers following his endorsement of the former president in September. Adrian Escárate, who had appeared in a video with the singer opposing Trump’s efforts to rescind DACA, criticized him publicly on X, calling him a “sellout.”
“I’m in the video below where I shared with Nicky Jam the fears that thousands of Dreamers with DACA like myself had about our protections taken away by Trump. Fast forward to now where it seems Nicky Jam used me to promote his music + sellout our community. Thanks for nothing,” Escárate wrote on X.
Despite Jam’s prior support for Trump in September, the former president mistakenly misgendered the singer during the rally.
“Latin music superstar Nicky Jam, do you know Nicky? She’s hot. Where’s Nicky?” Trump stated at his rally after gaining support from the Puerto Rican superstar.
The reggaeton singer was met with mixed feedback following his retraction.
Gracias @NickyJamPR.
Thank you for having the courage to show by example that it’s okay to change your mind and stand up for our community.
Que viva Puerto Rico y la comunidad Latina Harris también es la candidata que tiene el mejor plan en la economía por nuestra gente https://t.co/sbstMKjeT7— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 30, 2024
So Nicky Jam was cool with everything Trump & his supporters have said about black people, Mexicans , women & LGBTQ community, but now that a comedian makes a joke about PR he withdraws his support from Trump — Luis (@ItsMrLuis) October 30, 2024
