In the lead-up to the upcoming presidential election, Olivia Rodrigo sat down with reproductive rights activist Hadley Duvall to amplify their political voices and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris more urgently than ever. Rodrigo shared her commitment to the cause, encouraging her 38.2 million Instagram followers to recognize the significance of their vote.
Rodrigo highlighted Duvall’s experience with abuse and the critical importance of having a choice in reproductive rights in a heartfelt Instagram reel. “Stories like Hadley’s are exactly why this election is so important. A vote for Donald Trump is a vote for a national abortion ban, and a vote for Kamala Harris is a vote for reproductive freedom. Please use your voice and VOTE!” the post noted. They recall the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and implore the urgency to recognize the severe impacts that abortion bans can have on all women.
This isn’t the first time the pop star has advocated for reproductive health. She has been reinforcing support for Vice President Kamala Harris since earlier this year and has already collaborated with different organizations like the National Network of Abortion Funds, which is focused on improving access to abortion care across the nation. Recently, she donated a portion of her “Guts” tour sales to abortion care organizations and foundations.
Duvall, a Kentucky native, has become a prominent voice for abortion rights after sharing her experience of being impregnated by her stepfather at a young age. Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Duvall publicly revealed her story, advocating for reproductive freedom and serving as a powerful testimony to the necessity of access to abortion care. Her appearance at the Democratic convention and in a campaign ad for Harris has further solidified her role as a powerful voice in the fight for reproductive rights.
On the topic of the first campaign with Harris, Duvall urges that “it is not time for hate. It’s time for action and plans, and that’s what Kamala is trying to put into place. She gave me my biggest platform yet when she invited me to tell my story onstage.” President Trump’s administration’s policies have led to stricter state-level restrictions on abortion access since Roe v. Wade was overturned.
In contrast, Harris has made it clear that she intends to prioritize reproductive rights, pledging to support federal legislation that would safeguard the right to an abortion. In some states where there is a near total exception to the abortion ban, women are suffering due to the dangerously subjected medical care. Recently, an 18-year-old woman has died in the state of Texas after the state’s abortion plan denied her from getting necessary and life-saving medical attention.
