Tyla Releases New Y2K Inspired Music Video for ‘PUSH 2 START’
After releasing her new song “PUSH 2 START” last month, Tyla released a new music video, giving fans Y2K vibes.
2024 has been quite an eventful year for Tyla. The 22-year-old made history at the MET Gala, performed for the Victoria’s Secret runway show, and won the first-ever Grammy for Best African Music Performance award.
After releasing her self-named debut album back in March, she released an extended version in October, adding three new songs, including “SHAKE AH,” “PUSH 2 START,” and “BACK to YOU.” The South African singer released the single’s audio last month on YouTube, garnering almost 2 million listens. Four weeks later, she released an official music video for the track.
The video has received over a million views in less than 24 hours. Many viewers found it similar to Rihanna’s 2007 song, “Shut Up and Drive,” a music video similar to Tyla’s, which features both artists cleaning the cars, dancing, and dressed head-to-toe in iconic Y2K fashion. From chunky jewelry, bedazzled shorts, voluminous hair, and a belly piercing, She defines Y2K fashion and is a prime example of wanting to bring it back. She also showcased her African culture with the use of musical beats, sounds, and choreography.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan, the singer believes she was missing when it comes to pop stars and a real view into what it is like to be an African pop star. “I never had an example of how to be an African pop star,” she reflects. “People have an idea of Africa and it is very stereotypical. They see it as animals everywhere or think we’re hungry, we’re thirsty. It’s just so boring! We want to change that narrative. We want people to see Africa for really what it is. We have our fashion, our stylists, our creators, our artists, our producers. We have so much and we just need the eyes.”
Knowing how successful her 2024 year was, fans expected to see more accomplishments added to the list. However, after the Grammys released their nominations list on November 8, fans were stunned to find out she was not on it.
oh they completely shut tyla out of the grammys this year… I knew as soon as they started moving her considerations around that was going to happen. pic.twitter.com/mtQ8mhYF0x— i be like… DO IT 4 MY BABY! (@SUCKAW0RLD) November 8, 2024
Her fans believe a big factor in her snub was her move from the R&B category to the pop category, knowing her music is made up of R&B and South African sounds.
