Oscars 2025: This Year’s New First-Time Nominees
The 97 Academy Awards nominations were revealed Thursday morning. 13 first-time nominees who are up for taking home their first Oscars were revealed.
Best Supporting Actress Nominees
Most notably, Karla Sofia Gascón was nominated for best actress for her title role in Emilia Pérez. Gascón is the first openly transgender actress nominated. Elliott Page was nominated in 2008 for Juno, but that was 12 years before he revealed his gender identity.
Also nominated for her work in Emilia Pérez, Zoe Saldaña is up for best supporting actress. Their nominations are just two of the 13 nominations that the film received.
Another musical racking up ten nominations was Wicked. Ariana Grande received her first nomination for Best Supporting Actress as Glinda. Wait, or was it Ga-linda? I guess both are technically right.
Along with Grande, Isabella Rossellini earned a nomination for her role as Sister Agnes in Conclave. Additionally, Monica Barbaro, who portrayed Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown, also earned her first nomination in the same category.
Best Leading Actress Nominees
While on the topic of outstanding female talent, it’s important to note The Substance. Demi Moore took home her first Golden Globe for Best Actress as Elisabeth Sparkle and now has the chance to win her first Oscar too.

Many were surprised by Margaret Qually’s snub since she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes for her role as Sue in the film. However, her co-star in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood, Mickey Madison, was nominated for Best Leading Actress in her breakout role in Anora.
Fernanda Torres became the second Brazilian nominee for the Best Actress category for her role as Eunice Paiva in I’m Still Here. The first Brazilian nominee was actually Torres’ mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated in 1998.
Best Leading Actor
The category is riddled with first-time nominees including Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice). Culkin and Strong were co-stars on the wildly successful HBO original series, Succession.
Marvel’s Winter Soldier by day and recent president-elect by night, Sebastian Stan received his first Oscar nomination for Best Leading Actor for his role as Donald Trump in The Apprentice.
Yura Borisov, who depicts Madison’s romantic interest in Anora, is also a first-time nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category.
