Demi Moore Reunites ‘Charlie’s Angels’ to Talk New, ‘The Substance’
Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu reunited over Zoom to join their Charlie’s Angels co-star Demi Moore in a heartfelt conversation about her recent film, The Substance.
The four women, who worked together over 20 years ago on Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, have remained close friends since their action-packed days on set. Their last in-person reunion was at Liu’s Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony.

“We are four women who love each other, respect each other, have known each other, have worked together and celebrate female friendship,” Barrymore noted.
During their 25-minute discussion, the women expressed their admiration for one another, sharing curious questions, insightful commentary, and emotional reflections. They explored the film’s subject matter and its exploration of the many “layers” of being a woman, particularly a woman in Hollywood.
the substance getting into best picture feels like a dream. not only is it a body horror film but it’s a film made by a woman about women and how society views our bodies for their consumption and aging as a horror. i’m so proud of coralie fargeat and the whole team pic.twitter.com/Y6ItQ5vpSd

Demi Moore’s performance as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance has garnered significant acclaim, with critics praising her vulnerability and boldness in the role. Cameron Diaz highlighted Moore’s courage in tackling a character that had limited dialogue and sparse interactions with others, yet carried an intense emotional weight.
One of the most striking moments in their conversation revolved around the film’s iconic “makeup scene,” where Moore’s character viciously removes her lipstick. The scene struck a chord with audiences for its raw portrayal of self-criticism and body dysmorphia.
THIS moment in The Substance is the most relatable scene of the year for me. It perfectly captures my exact experience of body dysmorphia in a way I’ve never seen in film before.

Moore described her character’s profound isolation and lack of validation in the film, noting that Elisabeth Sparkle’s worth was tied solely to her career and outward appearance.
“Beauty was all that mattered.” Diaz remarked. “Elisabeth Sparkle had no friends, no family, no one knocking on her door wondering where she was.

In contrast, the actresses emphasized the strength of their real-life friendship and how they’ve stayed connected over the years. Their bond, built on mutual respect and support, was a stark reminder of how friendships provide the validation and encouragement that Moore’s character lacked in the film.
Moore also opened up about her own struggles in the industry. After four decades in acting, she revealed that she was close to leaving Hollywood entirely before this script came her way. Now, with her first Golden Globe win and an Academy Award nomination for The Substance, Moore is finally receiving the recognition she deserves.

Moore concluded the conversation with a touching anecdote about a discussion she had with her daughter, “…not wasting time focusing on all that you’re not when you could be celebrating all that you are.”
While fans continue to hope for another Charlie’s Angels film featuring this iconic quartet, their reunion offered plenty of heartfelt gems and thoughtful insights to hold us over, for now, at least.
