Will Smith is turning heads with his newest teaser for the single “Beautiful Scars,” teaming up with Big Sean in a Matrix-inspired trailer.

This marks the next phase of a promotional campaign launched earlier this month, sparking fan speculation about Smith’s creative direction. The trailer is set to the iconic theme from The Matrix, with the “Beware” artist stepping into the role of Morpheus, originally portrayed by Laurence Fishburne, and Smith embodying Neo.

This performance pays tribute to Smith’s real-life decision to pass on the role of Neo, which went to Keanu Reeves. In the clip, Big Sean, Morpheus hysterically references Smith’s career choices when he states, “Look, you’ve made some awesome career choices your whole life. There’s only one you truly regret. Well, maybe two, but we’re not gonna focus on that one.” This alludes to the actor’s infamous Oscar moment; the focus remains on his creative vision for the new project.

The Matrix-Inspired Journey

The scene later escalates as Big Sean shows Smith the infamous red or blue pill dilemma. “Blue pill, everything remains the same, and you get to move on with your life. Red pill, you get to go back and star in that movie that got away. The choice is yours,” he states. After a moment of contemplation, Smith surprises everyone by taking both pills simultaneously, declaring, “Here’s the thing, I like my life right now.” The rapper’s hilarious response, “S***, that wasn’t even an option,” adds a lighthearted twist to the philosophical undertone.

Other teasers hint at the actor’s past decision to turn down The Matrix in favor of the Wild West, raising the question, “What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?”

While fans initially speculated participation in a new Matrix project, it is now clear that the film-inspired video is on the horizon. “Beautiful Scars” drops on January 30.
