Reese Witherspoon shared updates on her latest project, Elle. The Legally Blonde prequel series is starting to pick up, and here’s what we know so far.

Witherspoon, who portrayed the iconic Elle Woods in the 2001 hit film, is stepping into an executive producer role for the upcoming spin-off series. Announced in May 2024, the show will follow a teenage Elle Woods as she navigates high school.

Currently, the casting process is underway. In an Instagram post from September, the actress shared that auditions to play the young Elle Woods were completely open. The casting window has since closed, and auditions are under review. “There’s so many good ones. That’s the hard thing because there’s so many good people to choose from,” mentioned the star.

Attached to the project are writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, both of whom worked on Gossip Girl. Marc Platt, who produced the original Legally Blonde movie franchise, is also reportedly involved, which garnered a lot of buzz already.

The 2001 film, which follows sorority-girl Elle Woods as she takes on Harvard Law school in hopes of winning back her ex-boyfriend, made over $140 million and received two Golden Globe nominations. A sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, followed shortly after in 2003. The film has stood the test of time, remaining a popular favorite due to its balanced blend of humor, empowerment, and romance.

“Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do,” claimed Witherspoon.

The series will stream exclusively on Prime Video, with filming set to begin in March of this year.
