Five-time host Trevor Noah returned to the ceremony this year, which became more than just celebrating music. The ceremony honored music and “the humanity and spirit of survival.”

Part of paying tribute to the city included giving businesses impacted by the fires commercial time, some of which had celebrities featured in their advertisements. There were several other nods to the city of Los Angeles throughout the night.

Here’s a recap of the night’s biggest moments:

This Year’s Opening Act Paid Tribute to Los Angeles

After losing a studio, equipment, and a band member’s home, Dawes was joined on stage by Brad Paisley, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, Brittany Howard, and St. Vincent to perform a show-stopping cover of “I Love L.A.” by Randy Newman.

Beyoncé Took Home Album of the Year, Announces Tour

After being nominated for the award four previous times and not taking it home, Beyoncé won Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter. She’s the first Black woman in the 21 century to win the award. She accepted the award alongside her daughter, Blue Ivy.

In continuing to pay tribute to Los Angeles, the award was presented by members of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Beyoncé also won Country Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter and Best Country Duo/Group Performance. These wins make her the first Black woman since the Pointer Sisters in 1974 to win an award in the country category.

When accepting her awards, she noted that it’s important for artists to step outside their comfort zone and pursue what they love.

“Sometimes genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists and I just want to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about and to stay consistent,” she stated.

She also announced the Cowboy Carter Tour, which will feature 22 shows starting in April.

Kendrick Lamar Made History

Kendrick Lamar was the night’s biggest winner, taking home five awards. His song “Not Like Us” has become one of the more celebrated diss tracks at the Grammys.

Lamar won Song of the Year, making history at the Grammys as the ceremony’s most-awarded rap song.

Doechii Wins Big

Doechii is now the third Black woman to win Best Rap Album with Alligator Bites Never Heal. She accepted the award alongside her mother.

“God told me that I would be rewarded and He would show me just how good it can get,” the rapper stated. “I know that there are so many Black women out there watching me right now and I just want to say you can do it.”

A Tribute to Quincy Jones

Several artists came together to perform an incredible tribute to the 28-time Grammy winner Quincy Jones. The performances included a blend of jazz and pop.

Cynthia Erivo performed “Fly Me to the Moon,” with Herbie Hancock on the piano. Lainey Wilson was then joined by Jacob Collier to perform a duet of “Let the Good Times Roll.”

To continue honoring Los Angeles and those impacted, students from Pasadena Waldorf School and Palisades Charter School joined Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock on stage to perform ‘We Are the World.’

Janelle Monáe wrapped up the tribute with a performance of “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough,” with her outfit and dance moves giving a nod to Michael Jackson.

Will Smith narrated the tribute, which included reflecting on his time with Jones. Smith and Jones worked together on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

“You probably wouldn’t even know who Will Smith was if it wasn’t for Quincy Jones,” Smith stated.

Chappell Roan Wins Best New Artist, Calls for Change

In addition to a captivating performance, Chappell Roan took home the award of Best New Artist at this year’s Grammys. During her speech, Roan called for change in the music industry, asking record labels to take better care of emerging artists by giving them higher wages and healthcare. She drew on her personal experience as an emerging artist to appeal to the labels.

“It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and so dehumanizing to not have help,” she stated. “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?”

Other artists spoke up about their concerns during the ceremony. Lady Gaga advocated for the LGBTQ community, and Alicia Keys took her stance on the importance of DEI.
