An adventure 65 million years in the making returns to the big screen. The largest franchise in the world is back in the brand new trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, promising more action, more scares, and many more dinosaurs.

Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali will lead this soft reboot, returning to its horror origins. They will also lead a covert team back to the research facility from the original Jurassic Park (1993)

Five years after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), the planet has become inhospitable for dinosaurs. The few that remain now live in remote tropical regions.

Covert operative Zora Bennet (Scarlett Johansson) is contracted to lead a team on a dangerous expedition into a secluded region in hopes of collecting DNA from the three most enormous creatures on the island. Their genetic material holds the promise of a life-saving cure for humanity.

On Bennet’s team are her most trusted partner, Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), and pharmaceutical rep Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend).

They return to the long-abandoned research facility from the original park. But they soon stumble upon a civilian family stranded on the island, where secrets are unearthed—secrets that were never meant to see the light of day.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is Reuben Delgado, the father of the stranded family, which includes young actors Luna Blaise, David Lacono, and Audrina Miranda.

Other team members include Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein.

Moviegoers who are not franchise fans are left scratching their heads; what more could another movie offer? What more can viewers take away other than “Dinosaurs are cool, but corporate greed sucks”?

What makes Jurassic World Rebirth Different?

Two words: mutant dinosaurs.

A line from the trailer, presumably from Bailey’s character, summarizes the film’s direction: “These dinosaurs were too dangerous for the original park. The worst of the worst were left here.”

Expect much more familiarity with the 1993 film. Audiences won’t get glimpses of Grant, Ellie, and Malcolm, but there might be some Easter Eggs—if you know your dinosaurs.

Die-hard fans are already ecstatic about the dinosaurs in the trailer, such as the Titanosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus, and the return of the beloved Spinosaurus.

According to Vanity Fair, producers Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg will embrace the franchise’s roots by striking fear into audiences’ hearts. And what better way to do that than by making dinosaurs bigger, scarier, and deadlier?

These “mutant mistakes” are based on real-life research by paleontologists, with some movie-making flair. In the years since the original Jurassic Park, these “failed attempts” at making T. rexs have evolved.

The Rebirth design team took inspiration not only from scientific research but also from other fictional monsters. The Xenomorphs from Alien and the Rancors of the Star Wars franchise were influential designs on these new monsters.

The film also supposedly includes a scene from Michael Crichton’s original 1990 sci-fi novel Jurassic Park. The scene involves an exciting river chase in which the team must navigate a lagoon without waking a sleeping T. rex.

Jurassic World: Rebirth will arrive in theaters this July.
