The Grammy award-nominated artist released her new music video for her song “Terrapin” off her latest album Charm. The song is her third off the album to have a music video after her songs, “Juna” and “Sexy to Someone,” which came out in August and December, respectively.

Clairo explained to Interview Magazine the meaning of her song, “Terrapin,” “That song is about getting drunk with a friend and just looking at them and being like, ‘I love you.’ Maybe you never say it to each other, but you say it then, and it’s this magical moment where you’re covered in love, you’re drenched in it, and nothing matters. Like, why do we shy away from this feeling?”

She added, “I think the song also made me realize that some people put a lot of weight on the word ‘love’ and never say it, and then some people use it so freely where it loses its meaning.”

The music video stars the legendary “Weird Al” Yankovic, who portrays Clairo. The “Terrapin” video makes its audience feel that “magical moment” Clairo mentions with its retro and dreamlike aura, taking clear inspiration from Grammy Award winner Dionne Warwick and her live performance of her signature song “Walk on By,” from the set to the dancers and their green sparkly dresses.

Warwick’s song is all about the pride women can feel when they regret letting themselves be vulnerable in love and it doesn’t work out. Clairo’s partial inspiration makes sense when “Terrapin” is similarly about vulnerability in love with Weird Al lip-syncing, “It’s a simple thing we’re all afraid and shy away / Now I find / I guess I don’t shy.”

The music video also takes inspiration from 80’s music videos with its special effects of Weird Al’s floating head lip-syncing like a power ballad.

The music video was directed by Emmy Award-winning actress Ayo Edebiri, who made her directorial debut recently when she directed the episode “Napkins” on the third season of The Bear. “Terrapin” is now Edebiri’s music video directorial debut, which fans were excited to see, commenting, “Love you and ayo foreveeer.”

On Instagram, Edebiri posted, “Thanks for having me, Claire. Thank you, Al (!!!). And thank you to the cast and CREW who are all named in the video. Lots of love.”
