Lucy Dacus Releases New Music Video for ‘Best Guess’
Indie rock musician Lucy Dacus released a new music video on Monday for her song “Best Guess” off her upcoming album Forever is a Feeling, releasing March 28.
This marks the second music video Dacus has released for Forever is a Feeling. Last month, she released her first music video, “Ankles,” featuring Bottoms actress Havana Rose Liu. That same month, the Grammy Award-winning singer performed this new song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Dacus fans first found out about the music video for “Best Guess” on January 7 when the boygenius member posted a TikTok, calling for “hot mascs” and those that are “smooth or suave or can pretend to be” to use the song’s audio “with a video of yourself looking cool.”
The music video puts a spotlight on queer mascs and gives the audience a 90’s Calvin Klein commercial feeling. Dacus admires the cast throughout the video as they do push-ups and arm wrestle. The cast definitely fulfilled their duty to be “smooth or suave” as her ad called for, as Drew Hermes flexed her tatted muscles and Gio Ferraro blew a kiss to the camera.
In response, fans have commented, “Lucy Dacus is lowkey leading the pervert femme revolution. if you think about it,” and “Lucy using her fame to put together a hot lesbian convention[?] Oh, I’m sure.” The cast themselves have also made jokes, with Mattie Westbrouck posting, “Lucy Dacus managed to end the masc shortage with one swift music video OUT NOW.”
While charisma was a major point of the cast, especially with romantic lyrics such as, “You may not be an angel / But you are my girl / You are my pack a day / You are my favorite place,” it wasn’t the only thing the music video demonstrated.
On Instagram, Ferraro noted this writing, “Best protest ever,” about the video. “Best Guess” portrayed its queer masc cast as a community joining the recent increase in masc representation alongside music videos like Kehlani’s “Next 2 U,” released last summer. The cast cheered, laughed, and gambled in poker together with real couple Zee Oumais and Natalia Castells Esquivel making out. Dacus highlights this aspect of community when singing, “You were looking for saints / But you only found people.”
Castells Esquivel posted to Instagram, “From being afraid to wear men’s jeans because people would think I’m a ‘lesbian’ to proudly kissing my girlfriend in a music video masc4masc style… Thank you Lucy Dacus & Team Lucy Dacus for letting me be part of such a special project. And huge shoutout to all the beautiful, kind, queer mascs & trans men in this video—we are worthy, visible, and handsome as f**k.”
