This sports comedy-drama, created by Mindy Kaling, offers a humorous exploration of the high-stakes world of professional basketball management. Running Point centers on Isla Gordon, portrayed by Kate Hudson, a reformed party girl who unexpectedly inherits the role of president of her family’s NBA franchise.

The series draws inspiration from the life of Jeanie Buss, the real-life owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, diving into themes of family dynamics, personal growth, and the challenges of leading a professional sports team. Hudson’s character navigates complex relationships, athlete egos, and her past, all while striving to bring the team back to its former glory.

Mindy Kaling, known for her work on The Sex Lives of College Girls, is the series’ creator and executive producer. In developing Running Point, Kaling sought to blend elements of humor and drama, drawing inspiration from the real-life dynamics of the Buss family. She aimed to create a narrative that resonates with audiences familiar with projects like Succession and Ted Lasso.

The ensemble cast features Brenda Song, who takes on the role of Ali Lee, Isla’s trusted confidante, and the team’s public relations expert. Max Greenfield portrays Lev Levy, a sports agent whose interests often intertwine with the team’s affairs. The cast also includes Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, and Jay Ellis.

The production of Running Point began in February 2024 in Los Angeles, with Kaling collaborating closely with co-writers Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen. The trio aimed to create a series that authentically embodies the behind-the-scenes workings of a professional basketball team, infused with her signature comedic touch. Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis also serve as executive producers, ensuring the comedy’s depiction of the basketball world remains genuine.

As the February 27 premiere approaches, Running Point is set to offer viewers a blend of comedy and drama, set against the vibrant backdrop of professional basketball. With its talented cast and creative team, the series promises to be a standout addition to Netflix’s lineup, appealing to fans of sports narratives and character-driven stories alike.
