British comedian and former Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas has apologized for statements he made while commenting on Millie Bobby Brown‘s appearance. The Stranger Things star, who has made headlines for changes to her appearance, came out publicly against bullying done by the media.

Lucas, in a post on Instagram, offered an explanation to the recently married actress. He wrote, “Nearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called ‘Little Britain.’ There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you had blonde hair and wore a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases.”

Lucas was “mortified” by the media attention that he “slammed” her, and praised Brown by calling her “brilliant.”

“I thought you looked terrific and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you, firstly because that’s not my style, and secondly because I think you’re brilliant. I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realise it has and for that I apologise. Matt x,” he concluded.

However some fans did not feel the apology was genuine, and took to X to defend the 21 year old star. Lucas’s original tweet remains up, however the tweet he was responding to has since been taken down. One user replied, “Way to not only reduce a young woman’s appearance to one of your comedic caricatures but also give a green light for countless men to pick her appearance apart. Do you see how that works?”

The actress has made headlines recently for changes to her appearance, opting for a more Y2K influenced style in Instagram posts. Some fans have speculated these are hints to potentially starring in the upcoming Jon M. Chu directed Britney Spears biopic.

In her response to the criticism on her appearance, she highlighted several media articles that commented on her looks in a post on Instagram. “I started in this industry when I was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me. Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things Season 1. And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”

She continued, “This isn’t journalism. This is bullying. The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices is disturbing.”

The actress, who recently starred in Netflix’s Damsel and married Jon Bon Jovi’s son Jake Bongiovi in 2024, is currently attending online courses at Purdue University Global, where she studies health and human services.
