The next generation of the Backstreet Boys is making its way to the stage as Baylee Littrell auditioned for American Idol on the season premiere.

New judge Carrie Underwood, who replaced Katy Perry this season, immediately sensed familiarity when she saw him.

“There’s something about you that looks familiar,” she stated.

The judges quickly learned that they were sitting in front of the son of Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell. Underwood pointed out how much he looked like his father, while fellow judge Luke Bryan added comedic commentary to the realization.

“You must forgive me, I didn’t have your dad’s posters in my room,” he stated.

Baylee’s video introduction included multiple clips of him on stage during his father’s shows. He talked about when he was 8 or 9 years old, opening for the Backstreet Boys during one of their arena performances.

The younger Littrell performed an original song for the judges titled, “Waiting On Myself to Die.” His audition received several compliments from the judges.

Baylee told the judges what it was like growing up with a famous father and realizing how popular he was. He explained that while he once wished to pursue something else, music has become the one thing he can’t escape.

“Trust me I wish I wanted to do something completely different,” he stated. “But if I’m not doing music there’s no way I can really exist.”

Brian eventually joined his son on stage, and Bryan asked the pair if they ever sang together. In response, they performed the chorus of Baylee’s audition song for the judges.

The Backstreet Boy explained how growing up with a parent in the music industry isn’t always as easy as people may think.

“Obviously growing up in the industry a lot of people would look at that as such a perk,” Littrell stated. “But it’s not easy. I’ve always told everybody that he’s ten times more talented than I ever was.”

Lionel Richie expressed his excitement about Baylee’s potential to his father, describing how he could be a big contender this season.

“I’m very happy for you and very proud of your son,” Richie stated. “He’s got his own lane and I think he could go a long way.”

The judges voted to send him through to Hollywood. The family was ecstatic, and even shed some tears in excitement.

Season 23 of American Idol airs on Sundays on ABC.
