New Materialists Trailer: Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal Are Caught up in a Dramatic Love Triangle
Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal fight for Dakota Johnson’s love in A24’s upcoming film, Materialists. Directed by Celine Song, known for her critically acclaimed Past Lives, the romance drama is highly anticipated and will hit theaters this summer.
The brand-new trailer introduces Johnson as Lucy, a skilled matchmaker who effortlessly brings perfect couples together — but when it comes to her own love life, she struggles to make a decision.
The official synopsis reads, “A matchmaker’s lucrative business is complicated when she falls into a toxic love triangle that threatens her clients.”
Lucy is torn between Pedro Pascal’s character Randy, a wealthy suitor, and Chris Evans’ character, John, her flawed ex-boyfriend.
John tells her, “When I see your face, I see wrinkles and children that look like you. So where does that leave us?”
Lucy’s inability to choose who she wants to be with makes her question her ability to do her job.
John asks her, “Why does anyone even get married,” to which Lucy responds, “Because they’re lonely… and because they’re hopeful.”

In addition to previewing a thrilling story and amazing cast, the trailer also debuts a new original song by Japanese Breakfast. The lead singer of the band, Michelle Zauner, is known for her best-selling book Crying In H-Mart and her Grammy-nominated album Jubilee. While this new song will not be on her upcoming project For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), the full album is out this Friday.
Materialists stands as director and writer Celine Song’s first project since Past Lives. The film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at last year’s Academy Awards.
Johnson’s last projects include the films Madame Web, Am I OK? and Cha Cha Real Smooth. Evans starred in last year’s popular holiday film Red One and Pascal appeared in Gladiator II, The Mandalorian and The Last of Us. He will also appear in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer.
Materialists will hit theaters on June 13. To watch the full trailer check it out below.
