Endless Summer Vacation, released in 2023 earned Cyrus her first Grammy win with “Flowers.” Since then, she stepped back into the recording studio to work on her new music. In the process, she was featured on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, which won the Album of the Year and Best Country Album Grammy Awards.
In a 2024 interview, Cyrus confirmed she was working on her own music, hinting at a visual album in the works. “It’s a concept album that’s an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music.” In her Harpers Bazaar cover story, she also announced she was working with Italian-Canadian director Panos Cosmatos. Cosmatos is known for his atmospheric and at times gruesome approaches to horror, particularly in 2018’s Mandy starring Nicolas Cage.
Cosmatos praised the artist’s visual album and promised it is “more experimental than anything she’s ever done, but in a pop way that I love.”
Also confirmed on the album is her 26-year-old musician boyfriend, Maxx Morando, who previously worked as a drummer for The Regrettes. Currently, he drums for Liily, a four-piece rock band from Los Angeles.
She continued, “It was inspired by Pink Floyd’s The Wall. My idea was making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.”

The Wall, Pink Floyd’s eponymous musical drama and eleventh studio album, follows a rock star named Pink who falls into a neurosis and builds a mental and emotional wall to cope. The concept album was at first seen as overly pretentious but has since been recognized as one of the best examples of the rock opera genre. Released in 1979, it’s one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The 31-year-old artist saw the film as a teenager and described the importance of her newest album to herself. She mentioned, “The visual component of [my album] is driving the sound. It was important for me that every song has these healing sound properties. The songs, whether they’re about destruction or heartbreak or death, they’re presented in a way that is beautiful, because the nastiest times of our life do have a point of beauty.”
The Disney star turned pop music icon has constantly reinvented her sound over the years. In 2013, she released the Mike WiLL Made-It produced Bangerz album to much controversy. She followed it up in 2015 with her independently released Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, working with psychedelic rock band The Flaming Lips.
In 2020, Cyrus leaned more into her interest in rock music with Plastic Hearts, which featured Stevie Nicks, Billy Idol, Dua Lipa, and Joan Jett. That album received positive reviews from critics and fans alike and landed on several Best Albums of 2020 lists. Recently, the singer appeared at Saturday Night Live’s 50 Anniversary broadcast performing “Nothing Compares 2 U” with Brittany Howard.
