Jon M. Chu Shuts Down Casting Rumors for New Britney Spears Biopic
Director Jon M. Chu denies casting rumors surrounding the new Britney Spears biopic film.
After a post on X stated Ariana Grande, Millie Bobby Brown, and Sabrina Carpenter were “battling” for the lead role in the upcoming Britney Spears biopic, Chu immediately shut down the claims. In fact, they have yet to even consider potential candidates for the cast.
“None of this is true. Sounds exciting but have not had one conversation about casting this film yet. We are way too early in development. Sorry,” he wrote.
Chu recently directed the Oscar-nominated film Wicked, and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, coming this November. Universal Pictures and producer Marc Platt, who backed the record-breaking film, is also set to have a hand in this upcoming film.
The pop star-inspired film will be based on Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me, which sold over 2.5 million copies in just the United States. The audiobook, narrated by Michelle Williams, followed by an introduction from Spears, became Simon & Schuster’s fastest-selling release. After the memoir’s release in 2023, Spears stated, “I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support.”
The memoir details her rise to fame from The Mickey Mouse Club all the way to her conservatorship. The film has not confirmed what specific topics will be depicted.
The project generated buzz on the internet, with fans weighing in on who should take the coveted role; though, it is still too early to tell.
