Charli XCX Surprises in New Overcompensating Trailer
“365” singer-songwriter Charli XCX refuses to perform one of her biggest hits in the trailer for the college comedy series, Overcompensating. A joint venture with Amazon MGM, and studio house A24, the series is executive produced by Jonah Hill’s Strong Baby Productions and its star, comedian Benito Skinner.
The latest trailer for the raunchy series includes Benito Skinner as a “closeted former football player and Idaho homecoming king,” according to its official synopsis. Skinner writes, stars, and produces the series. It also boasts a number of guest stars, including the Brat singer, who serves as the executive producer of music for the series.
Towards the end of the trailer, the Grammy-nominated star portrays a parody version of herself, snapping, “Do you think I wanna play f—ing ’Boom Clap’ in a f—ing college? Are you joking?”
Charli XCX steadily released music throughout the 2010s, first stepping onto the international stage with “Boom Clap,” featured in The Fault in Our Stars and notably collaborating with Iggy Azalea on the commercially successful single, “Fancy” in 2014.
The collaboration peaked at number one on the Billboard charts for seven weeks. She also has songwriting credits on tracks including Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love” and Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s “Señorita.”
In recent years, she leaned more creatively toward hyper-pop with 2020’s How I’m Feeling Now, created during the Covid-19 lockdown, and 2022’s Crash, which landed on multiple Best Albums lists. However, it was 2024’s Brat album that granted Charli XCX mainstream success and notoriety, inspired by 2000s rave culture. The album won two Grammy Awards and left a cultural impact felt worldwide.

After a whirlwind “Brat Summer,” Skinner announced that not only would the British-born musician produce music for the series, but she would also appear on screen for it as well. In October, he teased a potential on-screen appearance with, “Oh and if you thought @charli_xcx was only doing the music…”

The series will be Charli XCX’s official acting debut after appearing on SNL late last year. However, she is not slowing down on the projects: she has appearances in nine upcoming films in the works, most notably The Gallerist, a thriller set to be released in 2026. She’ll star alongside Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph
She is also reportedly eyed for a role in Greta Gerwig‘s Chronicles of Narnia film, which is set for release in November 2026; however, she has not commented on the speculation.
Overcompensating premieres on May 15.
