Wicked: For Good Sees First Look at CinemaCon

Come November, audiences will be changed for good. Closing out the Universal presentation at CinemaCon, members of the press got a glimpse at the highly anticipated sequel, Wicked: For Good.
Although there was no showstopping performance, the film’s stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, joined director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt for a mini presentation and first look at the teaser.
The teaser opens with cracked windows in the Emerald City. As Glinda steps out, she pleads with Elphaba, “Elphaba, I know you’re here…Just come out before the monkeys spot you… Elphaba, they’re coming for you. Think about what we can do together.”

She’s then met with the witch’s rebuttal, “This is between us, the wizard and I.” As Prince Fiyero frantically searches for Elphaba, she takes to the sky and writes, “OUR WIZARD LIES.”
The teaser also reveals Glinda’s wedding to Fiyero, along with the Wizard at his boards, and the intersection between Wicked and The Wizard of Oz as he rallies Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion with the command: “Bring me the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West.” Despite early speculations, Dorothy’s involvement in the film is larger than her appearance in the musical.

The teaser culminates in a sneak peek of the heartwrenching ballad, “For Good.”
“I’ve heard it said that people come into our lives, for a reason / Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better / Because I knew you / I have been changed for good,” the pair sings as a shot of The Wizard of Oz gang crosses the Yellow Brick Road.
Truly, the scene is sure to make audiences cry, which Grande promises to do much of on the press tour, but this time she’s packing tissues.
After Elphaba shouts, “I’m off to see the wizard,” she flies through the air, followed by the flying monkeys, and the teaser cuts to the title card.
So far, attendees are calling the sequel “deeper, darker, and scarier,” but also “a major upgrade” from part one, which fans were concerned about, given the consensus indicates Act 2 of the musical lacks the same impact as the first.
The trailer is expected to drop any moment now, as Universal Pictures’ website struggles to keep up with demand—its new “Watch the Trailer” link is live but crashing every few minutes due to overwhelming traffic. Keep your eyes peeled until then.
Wicked: For Good premieres in theatres on November 21. You can watch Wicked: Part One now on Peacock.
