The Pitt follows the medical staff of an emergency room during a chaotic 15-hour shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, a fictional hospital in Pittsburgh, also nicknamed “the Pitt.” The series was created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by John Wells and Noah Wyle. Wyle also leads the on-screen cast as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, a senior attending for this 15-hour day shift.

The three EPs appeared at Deadline‘s Contenders TV panel this past weekend, ready to answer questions about their new medical drama, which premiered on January 9. In February, only halfway into the fifteen-episode season, the series was renewed for a second season.

How to Top The Pitt Season 2

Spoilers for the first season of The Pitt on Max.

This shift has already had so much chaos: a child eating his dad’s edibles, a teenager trying to get an abortion, and fellow Dr. Cassie McKay’s (Fiona Dourif) ex-husband with a broken leg from skateboarding without a helmet. Learn from his mistakes, everyone, safety first.

As if that wasn’t enough, the last three episodes consisted of them taking on a mass casualty event from a music festival. After a grueling two hours of triage, the chaos dies down, and guess what? Here comes a kid with measles and anti-vax parents, Dr. Robby, we salute you.

This 15-hour shift has already been a nightmare for the medical staff. How could a second season raise the stakes?

Remember, The Pitt comes from the same creators behind ER, the NBC medical drama that ran for 15 seasons in the late nineties. Anything could happen; they could even drop a helicopter on our least favorite character (did anyone like Dr. Romano?)

During the panel, Gemmill revealed that season 2, which is already in production, will take place over a 15-hour shift during a Fourth of July weekend.

This is honestly the most unexpected and yet very welcome idea. The biggest holiday of the summer: hot grills, slip-and-slides, parties, drunk relatives, fireworks? The potential medical emergencies are endless, which is more exciting for us viewers.

Given the timing, season 2 will take place roughly ten months after the events of season 1. There’s also potential for staff changes; some interns and residents, including Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez), Trinity Santos (Isa Briones), and Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell), will have finished their rotations and potentially moved on to other medical endeavors. We can only hope that fan favorite Mel King (Taylor Dearden) will be returned to us.

And what about Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball)? Robby’s right-hand man in The Pitt was caught red-handed, stealing meds from the hospital. It appears that Robby is confused about the loss of trust versus not wanting to tank Langdon’s career over his addiction.

In a sneak peek for episode 15, Langdon and Robby were battling it out in the hospital’s ambulance bay, the former begging the latter for another chance.

As the end of the day shift nears, there’s no telling how our medical staff will manage.

The season finale of The Pitt premieres this Thursday on MAX.
