Netflix’s new limited series Adolescence premiered all four episodes on March 13, but after viewer acclaim, Plan B Entertainment is in talks to renew the project for a second season.

Co-presidents of Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, were interviewed by Deadline and discussed the possibility of creating a season 2 of the popular series. Conversations with director Philip Barantini surrounding a possible extension of the project are currently underway.

Gardner and Kleiner hope the series’ writers, Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, can reunite for the endeavor. Graham also starred in the series as Eddie Miller, Jamie’s father.

About Adolescence

The crime drama follows 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is suspected of murdering his classmate, Katie. It quickly reached wild success among viewers as it sits fourth on Netflix’s list of Most Popular English-Language TV series with 114.5 million views.

In the interview, Gardner praised Barandini’s filming method, describing its significant contribution to the series’ depth.

“Phil’s style of doing the episodes in one-take is not a gimmick,” Gardner stated. “It’s very much in conversation with the subject matter. In early conversations with Stephen and Jack, they were talking about how it’s too easy to look away. You can look away from the school, you can look away from the police station, you can look away from the counseling, you can look away from the family. In that kind of prismatic way of viewing, you can duck the issue. So our theory was, what would happen if you couldn’t look away? And will that make the subject embed in you in a different way?”

The series was first pitched to Prime Video, but it was rejected. The production company then moved to Netflix, and it caught the attention of co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who took to Instagram to celebrate the release of the series last month.

“In the sea of great series and films on Netflix, every once and awhile one comes along that pushes into brand new territories, defies the limits of creativity and features career defining performances,” Sarandos stated on Instagram. “For me, ‘Adolescence’ is that show.”

Kleiner credited Pitt as he was an integral part of getting the series up and running.

“He was part of the energy, drive, and impetus to get the thing off the ground,” Kleiner stated.

This isn’t the first time the Moneyball star worked with Graham. The pair featured together on Snatch, a feature released in 2000 by Guy Ritchie.
