Lorde Announces New Single to be Released
Lorde announced that her newest single, “What Was That,” is coming.
The “Royals” singer posted on social media to announce the single. The post included a photo of herself with her hair in braids and water dripping down her face. The caption read, “My new song What Was That. Out Soon.”
This is Lorde’s first major release in four years. Her latest solo project, Solar Power, debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. Her other albums include Melodrama and Pure Heroine. Last year, she worked with pop star Charli xcx on a remix of one of her hit songs off of brat, “Girl, So Confusing.”
Lorde has worked closely with Charli xcx recently. In September 2024, the “Apple” singer surprised fans at her Madison Square Garden concert by bringing Lorde onto stage to perform their remix. A few days ago, the New Zealand native appeared on stage during Charli xcx’s performance at Coachella to perform the remix again.
The “Green Light” artist first teased her upcoming single last week on TikTok. In her first TikTok post, the artist strolled through Washington Square Park, listening to a song snippet. She further teased her fans in a voice memo.
“I just wanted to say hi because everything is about to change,” she stated. “These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. But so right. I’m so ready.”
Lorde rose to stardom with her hit song “Royals,” which made her the first female solo artist to top the Billboard alternative chart in the United States in 17 years. The track also won her two Grammys in 2014: Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year. She also won Best Rock Video in the MTV Video Music Awards for “Royals,” making her the first female artist to win that category.
However, she got started in music long before that track was released. Her first project was a self-released EP called The Love Club EP, which she published on SoundCloud. It was released on streaming platforms the following year.
In the meantime, her discography can be streamed here.
