Hailee Steinfeld revealed how her role in the upcoming film Sinners strengthened her connection with acting and music.

Steinfeld portrays Mary, a strong, complex woman grappling with the loss of her mother. The “Most Girls” singer described how music became a source of comfort for her character.

“She will never not grieve the loss of her mother, but she’s looking for that sense of comfort that you do when you lose someone. In this case, it’s the music,” she stated in an interview with Collider. “The music is her home. The music is her safe space.”

Not only is music important to her character, but it’s an essential aspect of the film as a whole. In the same interview, the Edge of Seventeen actress defined how bringing her various interests into one project is important.

“I felt so, so lucky to be a part of a movie like Sinners where music is such a huge part of it,” she stated. “This is the dream — for me to be able to open the door again to work on something that I’m very, very excited about and can’t wait to share more with people. It’s been a long time, and I didn’t realize how much I missed it.”

For fans who have missed Steinfeld’s music, this film comes with her first musical release in two years. The Pitch Perfect 3 star recorded a new song for the film’s soundtrack, “Dangerous.”

In her interview, she explained why she’s taken a step back from music in recent years.

“I had taken a bit of a break from music, which was a very difficult decision to make, but I wanted to focus on my acting and was happy to be doing that,” she stated. “It goes without saying, but… music is a love of mine and a huge passion and something that has played a very strong role in my life in more ways than one, and having had the opportunity to make music through the years of my own is something I will never take for granted.”

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners is an action-thriller set in the 1930s southern United States.Steinfeld stars alongside Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Saul Williams, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Jack O’Connell, Li Jun Li, Tenaj L. Jackson, and others. The film hits theatres on April 18.
