With the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” this year’s event honored how tailoring and menswear have played a powerful role in shaping Black identities across centuries.

The exhibit drew inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” As she explained in a statement, Black dandyism represents a transformation “from being enslaved and stylized as luxury items” to becoming “autonomous, self-fashioning individuals who are global trendsetters.”

While the exhibit explored centuries of Black sartorial expression, the red carpet became a stage where global stars, including these South Korean icons, interpreted the theme with personal flair and artistic nuance.

Jennie Channels Coco Chanel

Jennie of BLACKPINK, representing Chanel, turned heads in a tuxedo gown layered over a tailored black jumpsuit. Her ensemble, accessorized with Chanel pearls, a white flower, and a black hat with white trim, drew direct inspiration from Coco Chanel’s 1920s and ’30s designs.

When asked about BLACKPINK’s upcoming tour, the “Like Jennie” singer teased, “I can’t be the one spoiling everything, but it’s going to be good. We can’t wait to meet our fans.”

Lisa’s Artistic Lace Look

Making her Met Gala debut, Lisa stunned in a black lace ensemble by Louis Vuitton. She wore a blazer over a bodysuit and monogrammed tights, but the lace, featuring tiny, intricate faces, made her look especially memorable.

According to Louis Vuitton, the design, based on an artwork by American artist Henry Taylor, depicts “portraits of figures who have been a part of the artist’s life.”

Rosé Redefines the Tuxedo

Rosé, also of BLACKPINK and a Saint Laurent ambassador, embraced the tailoring theme in a sophisticated black tuxedo accented with red heels. Her jewelry, highlighted by a Tiffany & Co. platinum and gold pendant with sapphire and diamonds, added a luxurious finish.

Speaking about the group’s future, Rosé shared, “We’ve got new music coming out, so I feel that’s going to be a whole different approach to how we storytell this next tour.”

S.Coups Makes a Statement in Boss

S.Coups of SEVENTEEN brought a modern edge to the red carpet in an asymmetrical gray suit by Boss. His look featured an oversized silhouette, a mandarin-collar shirt, and a dramatic evening coat.

Off the carpet, the K-pop rapper and SEVENTEEN are preparing for the release of their fifth full-length album, HAPPY BURSTDAY, set to drop on May 26.

Global Dialogue Through Style

Through tailored garments and intentional design, attendees, such as K-pop’s finest, paid homage to the rich history of Black dandyism and redefined contemporary elegance. The evening proved that tailoring isn’t just about cut and fit—it’s about telling stories, claiming space, and redefining the past through the present lens.
