Materialists: A Deeper Look into the Rom-Com with New Second Trailer
With the release of the second Materialists trailer, audiences get another glimpse into the love triangle between Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. Directed by Celine Song, known for her critically acclaimed Past Lives, the A24 romance drama will hit theaters June 13.
The brand-new trailer opens with, “In a world of matchmaking, no one plays the game better than Lucy.” The voiceover is spoken by a deep male voice reminiscent of classic early 2000s rom-coms.
Celine Song brings an exquisite sense of depth & yearning to the modern fairy tale rom-com in #Materialists, & if you’re like me, it’ll make you swoon hard. The three leads blend charm & thoughtfulness with ease, & Song helps prove that NYC is the most romantic city in the world. pic.twitter.com/B96dTccee3

Johnson portrays Lucy, a New York matchmaker who can bring perfect couples together; however, she struggles to make decisions about her own love life.
While prioritizing her job, not her romantic interests, Lucy meets Pedro Pascal’s character, Randy, a kind and wealthy suitor.
As depicted in the trailer, Lucy tells Randy, “You make me feel valuable.” Randy responds, “You are valuable.”
While things seem to be going well with Randy, a run-in with Chris Evans’ character, John, her flawed ex-boyfriend, makes Lucy question who she wants to be with.
Lucy tells John, “You’re the same as always.” John replies, “I was hoping you’d say I was different. Because then I wouldn’t be the guy that lost you.”
The trailer closes with Johnson’s debatable statement, “When you love someone, it’ll be easy. No matter [what].”
Materialists is director and writer Celine Song’s first project since Past Lives. The film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at last year’s Academy Awards.
In addition to previewing a thrilling story and showcasing an amazing cast and crew, the trailer debuts a new original song by Japanese Breakfast. The band’s lead singer, Michelle Zauner, is known for her best-selling book Crying in H-Mart and her Grammy-nominated album Jubilee.
Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal will star in Celine Song’s Materialists, which will hit theaters on June 13. The film is highly anticipated to not only tell a complex story but also revive a period of profound romance films.
