Kendrick Lamar Wins New Webby Award for Internet-Breaking ‘Not Like Us’ Music Video
Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” won Best Music Video at Monday’s Webby Awards.
The 29 Annual Webby Awards Ceremony aims to honor “the best of the internet.” Presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, the Webby Awards celebrated creators like Chicken Shop Date’s Amelia Dimoldenberg and the “very demure, very mindful” Jools Lebron.
Hosted by comedian Ilana Glazer, the ceremony celebrated all things internet, including an award for best music video of the year. The nominations included iconic music videos such as Charli xcx’s “Von Dutch,” Dua Lipa’s “Illusion,” Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra,” and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Mamushi.” Kendrick Lamar ultimately earned the award for “Not Like Us,” continuing his year’s winning streak.
The music video has over 300 million views on YouTube and topped the Billboard charts this past Summer, becoming a cultural phenomenon since its release. Lamar not only swept the Grammys with the song winning Best Rap Song, Best Music Video, Best Rap Performance, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year, but even performed it at this year’s historic most-viewed Super Bowl halftime. “Not Like Us” has been referenced by everyone from Former Vice President Kamala Harris on the campaign trail to the Argentina National Football Team during Copa América.
In an interview for Harper’s Bazaar, SZA asked him what “Not Like Us” meant to him.
The “All the Stars” rapper replied, “Not like us is the energy of who I am, the type of man I represent. Now, if you identify with the man that I represent …This man has morals, he has values, he believes in something, he stands on something. […] He’s a man who can recognize his mistakes and not be afraid to share the mistakes and can dig deep down into fear-based ideologies or experiences to be able to express them without feeling like he’s less of a man.”
Although the song is notable for winning the feud against Drake, he was not mentioned. SZA did ask him whether anger was a source for the song.
“I don’t believe I’m an angry person. But I do believe in love and war, and I believe they both need to exist. And my awareness of that allows me to react to things but not identify with them as who I am. Just allowing them to exist and allowing them to flow through me,” he shared.
